Citizen Science

Citizen science is conducted on a volunteer basis by members of the general public. FRNC offers a variety of opportunities for you to learn more about plant and animal life while contributing to the scientific community, getting outside, and having fun.

+ Phenology - begins in september

Join FRNC and the National Phenology Network’s efforts to monitor the impact of climate change on plants. On Thursdays during the fall and spring, our team notes various stages in plant development. Participants are asked to collect data at least twice month from March-May and September-November. For more information, visit the National Phenology Network.

+ Project Feederwatch - begins in October

Join FRNC's feederwatchers and drink coffee while making contributions to science! Watch birds at th Nature Center feeders form November to April and submit the data to Project Feederwatch. For more information about Project Feederwatch, click here.

+ Frogwatch - begins in February

If you enjoy listening to the croaking choruses of frogs during spring and summer evenings, Frogwatch is the program for you! Volunteers are trained to identify calls of frogs and toads in wetland ecosystems to collect data on local species diversity. For more information, visit the Frogwatch USA website.

+ Water Quality Testing - begins XXXX

The Blind Brook can suffer serious damage from runoff after significant rain events. Help our conservation workers test the water quality and collect data on what is flowing into the Sound!

+ Eel Monitoring - begins in early march

Believe it or not, the Blind Brook is home to many of these wriggling wonders! Some of the eels born in the Sargasso Sea will mature here in Rye. Help the naturalists at FRNC gather data about the local population.

+ pond watch - begins in late march

BMonitor the five major species of dragonflies that can be found in our ponds throughout the year. From first sightings to fall migrations, we will observe it all. For more information, click here.

+ turtle tracking - begins in late april

Help FRNC staff find and track our resident box turtles! You will add to over 30 years of data that has been collected about our box turtle program.
